WISA recognize and reward excellence by women scientists and researchers by profiling them as role models to younger women. The 2016 WISA was Women’s Empowerment and its link to sustainable development, which is the 2016 priority theme of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Awards in the distinguished women and distinguished young women researcher categories were made for research that responded to the theme within the fields of Physical and Engineering Sciences, as well as Humanities and Social Sciences.
